How to care for and clean clinical loupes

Well-cared-for loupes last many years; mistreated ones age in months — and almost always from the same three or four habits. This guide gathers realistic maintenance: what yes, what no, and why.

The golden rule: optics are not a countertop

The lens treatments (anti-reflective, anti-fog) are ultra-thin layers on the glass. What kills them isn't use: it's aggressive disinfectants and dry rubbing.

  • Never concentrated alcohols, bleach, acetone or surface

disinfectants directly on the optics: they attack coatings and adhesives.

  • Never rub dry with your gown or a napkin: dust acts like

fine sandpaper.

  • Yes: blow or rinse first, clean after. The sequence matters more

than the product.

The one-minute routine, at day's end

1. Blow or rinse visible dust (air blower or lukewarm water; never hot). 2. Neutral soap and fingertips on the lenses, gently. 3. Rinse and pat dry with a clean microfibre cloth — an optics one, washed without softener. 4. Check screws and pads while you're at it: a screw that wobbles today is misaligned optics tomorrow.

For the frame and temples you can use a compatible disinfectant wipe, avoiding contact with the lenses.

Disinfection in clinic, without killing the optics

Between patients, the sensible thing is to disinfect what you touch — frame, temples, bridge — and keep the product away from the optical surface. If your protocol demands more, check compatibilities before premiering a new product: it costs an email and avoids an upset. Differences between mounts here are smaller than they seem; we tell it in TTL or flip-up — your discipline rules, not the hinge.

Storage and transport: the avoidable accident

Most knocks don't happen while working: they happen on the table. The rigid case that comes with every system exists for those moments — use it whenever the loupes aren't on your face, and never leave them on a car dashboard in the sun (heat deforms pads and affects adhesives). Loose cases and spares are in accessories.

The light needs care too

If your system carries a front light: connector clean and dry, batteries stored with some charge (not drained for weeks) and the cable —if any— unpinched. The light guide explains why battery life is protected by these habits.

What you shouldn't “fix” yourself

A custom loupe is aligned to your eyes. If the image doubles, an ocular wobbles or the frame got twisted after a knock: don't straighten it by hand. Bending it “by eye” usually turns a minutes-long adjustment into a repair. Write to us and we'll look at it — fine adjustment after delivery is part of the fitting service, and the rest is covered by warranty and after-sales.

In short

Lukewarm water and neutral soap, clean microfibre, disinfectant only where you touch, case always, and technical service for what got bent. Four small habits that keep your investment sharp — literally — for years.
